Golf?

April 14, 2008 by whyask

With the “Masters” coming up this weekend, I can’t help but wonder: is there even a point anymore? The golf industry is currently completely dominated by Tiger Woods, it almost seems as though the competition in the game doesn’t exist anymore. This is not just a result of Tiger’s incredible talent, but also lack of publicity for the rest of the industry. Obviously people still watch the game and many will especially be watching this weekend, but I believe agents or publicists need to get their guys out there. Tiger is not the only player, but he is the only one with his own “Gatorade” flavor. With March Madness over, golf could very much take over as the current “it” sport. It may not ever be as popular as basketball, baseball or football, but it could definitely rise above the level that it is right now.

Where in the World is Ross?

I like to start my weekdays by tuning into “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” in the morning. Sometimes, if I’m not particularly busy on that day, I tune into a bit of “The View.” This past Wednesday morning happened to be one of those days. I wasn’t sure who the guest was going to be, but I decided to linger and find out. Let me just say that I was surprised to discover that it was none other than Ross Geller, real life name: David Schwimmer. My initial thought “what on earth is he doing on the show? Does he have a movie coming out? Is “F.R.I.E.N.D.S” coming to the big screen?”

For those of you wondering where in the world Ross is, here’s your answer. It turns out that he has switched sides; he’s gone from being in front of the camera to behind the scenes, as the director of the new movie “Run Fat Boy Run.” Interesting. This new found discovery led me to become intrigued about his life, so I went to http://www.imdb.com and looked him up. I learned that he has previous directing experience and that he is also acting in a couple of new movies yet to be released. It was comforting to hear that somebody I used to religiously watch every Thursday night is doing well. Had it not been for his appearance on “The View,” I wouldn’t have known he was working anymore. With that said, his publicist needs to re-introduce him to the media. Perhaps he should starting dating Britney Spears, maybe he could be the man to save her!

It’s All Over

It took me awhile to post the following statement. I wasn’t sure how to say it from the perspective of a publicist, but that’s what I realized: some people don’t need a publicist. Some people just have that it quality that enables everyone to love them, no matter what. Even with my heart broken, I still loved him. And that is exactly what I learned the morning of March 4th. Immediately I wrote the following, but I couldn’t bare to click the publish button because somehow I still didn’t believe it, or at least I didn’t want to believe it. I believe it now…

I suppose it’s all over. Brett Favre after 17 years, 16 with the Green Bay Packers, has retired. My idol, number one athlete, number one fascination, number one following, has hung his number four jersey for eternity. The emotion upon discovering this early morning can only be described as wretched. I feel terrible and stand in a state of awe, still not believing that the hero that is Brett Favre will never walk through the Lambeau Tunnel again. Every football season I’ve ever experienced has been filled with such joy and excitement: watching him play the game with a passion people can only hope to someday feel about anything. So goodbye to you Brett, you leave in typical Brett Favre fashion: on your time and on top.

The Spears Curse

March 21, 2008 by whyask

Jaime Lynn Spears pregnant. The news buzzed all over the media, from gossip blogs such as Perezhilton.com to MSNBC to CNN. 16 year old Jaime Lynn is impregnated by her boyfriend, Casey Aldridge, 18, and is now roughly six months along (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22318291/) They met when Jaime Lynn was only 14 at their church. He is described by others as a “good guy” and was voted Class Favorite by his peers at Amite School Center in Liberty, Mississippi. Jaime Lynn encourages other kids to wait, but has chosen to keep her child and deal with problems as they come. Her popular Nickelodeon show, Zoey 101, has not been cancelled and new episodes continue to air.

With Britney Spears leading the crazy wagon, people didn’t expect Jaime to follow closely behind. When the story broke, every media market appeared to be in a state of disbelief and were simply reporting the facts. Shortly after, mom Lynne Spears was targeted and labeled a terrible mother. What’s interesting about this crisis is that although Jaime is responsible for her own actions and is the one carrying the child, she doesn’t really appear to be the one targeted. The emphasis on this situation is that of the horrible job Lynne has done of raising her two girls. With headlines like “Destroyed by Mama” the blame has been placed on the mother.

That was prior to Jaime Lynn actually showing the bump. Now that her pregnancy has evolved, pictures are being posted of her in baggy t-shirts with her boyfriend, both walking around like a happy couple. However, the quotes that are attached to those pictures are a little more diverse, some congratulating the couple for sticking together through this and taking responsibilities for their actions, others plotting the demise of her career and prematurely labeling her a has-been, or rather a could-have-been.

The story first surfaced as a result of her mother, Lynne, selling the story to OK magazine for $1 million. Jaime and her mother were able to tell their story their way. Friends of the family are speaking up of their shock and initial devastation. Oddly enough, Britney created her own scandal by claiming that in fact, Jaime wasn’t pregnant, despite the fact that she went public with the declaration herself. Her boyfriend, Casey, is yet to make a statement to the media stating his opinion on the entire situation. Nickelodeon released a statement wishing Jaime the best and supporting her in this rough time. Jaime Lynn now appears very cool and collected about her pregnancy and has told the media that she plans to raise her child in Louisiana in a normal, everyday setting.

Blog coverage on the incident is a little less supportive than that of the media however. They are shaming her for her bad judgment and inability to make the right choice. Some are calling it statutory rape, as she is only 16 and Casey is 19 years old. Then of course, there are the blogs that claim the entire Spears family is just crazy and “like sister like sister.”

The important thing about this coverage is that Mainstream Media seems to be more understanding of the situation. Also, Jaime has chosen to get pregnant at a time when it has become trendy to be young and pregnant. This does seem like something that Jaime and her career can overcome together. She has spoken openly about her situation and, although she is a teen role model, perhaps her situation can be used to teach others what not to do. With the birth of her child she will embark on a brand new journey that, without a doubt, will be documented fully by the paparazzi. If she maintains her feet firmly on the ground, she can create a whole new image for herself and her future career.

What Happened?

Growing up I always thought John Travolta was sexy. To this day everytime I see Grease I find him attractive: the dance moves, the attitude, the confidence. He’s no longer the sexy T-Bird, now he’s in women’s fat suits and attempting to save his receding hair line with what appears to be hair powder. I blame this on his stylist and his publicist. Someone needs to be a pal and remind him of who he once was and what he looks like now. If he’s going bald I advice him to own it. Save John Travolta!

I wish someone would just say it. Dwight Howard won the slam dunk contest this past Saturday. Understandably it’s suppose to be an entertaining event, but come on someone needs to say and let me be the person to say it. While this picture is ideal for his argument that indeed it was a dunk, it’s extremely deceiving. From about 5 feet he chunks the ball and it gets pronounced a dunk. Yes, it was an incredibly high jump, something to be remembered for, but best dunk- no.

As I was watching Sports Center on Monday, Skip casually argued that indeed it was not a dunk. I usually don’t agree with him, as he tends to be an idiot, but thanks! As much publicity as he received for it, finally someone pointed out the cold hard facts. Not to dismiss his incredible talent, and the fact that he is naturally gifted with the gift of height, but i must say, blowing out a cupcake while you go up for a dunk- that is impressive.

MLB: 1876-2008

It seems though baseball will never be the same. Although in the past few years there have been chronic steroids or HGH investigations, this has become the straw that broke the MLB’s back.

Roger Clemens (Texas Ex, Yankee, Astro, Red Sox and Blue Jay) was first targeted back in December of last year in the Mitchell Report, which stated he used steroids and HGH from the years of 1998-2001. This past Wednesday, February 13, Roger Clemens was sworn into court to testify to House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. Live on National television, former pitcher Roger Clemens repeated over and over again that he did not use HGH or any other steroid ever in his career. The man who claimed he  injected human growth hormones into Clemens at his request, former trainer Brian McNamee, stood in the same room, testifying against Clemens and swearing to tell “the whole truth and nothing but the truth so help me God.” A back and forth battle of uncoordinated stories, the art of baseball was slowly degraded and shattered.

The truth regarding Clemens’ personal use of steroids or HGH may never be unleashed, but what will always remain emblazed on people’s brains is his scandal and the demotion of baseball in the year 2008. It becomes a no-win situation for Clemens: he’s found innocent, the scandal and betrayal by his closet friends (Pettite) will forever remain. He’s found guilty, then all his records, all his glory and admiration vanishes. Everything he worked his entire life for, any award won, will be retracted from him forever. Unfortunately people will always remember the bad times and his decades of good will be slowly forgotten. At this point, Roger Clemens’ image is sunk, with no foreseeable chance of rescue.

Waiting for August

It’s tough being a football fan- with the highs come the extreme lows. As a dedicated, life-long Green Bay Packers fan, I must say this has been a rough ending to what I could have only dreamed of being my perfect season. The loss to the Giants in the NFC Championship game can only be described as heart-breaking. Absolutely heart-breaking. Surprising- there’s another word. Not only did Green Bay lose, but would Brett Favre come back or would the world have seen the last of who could only be described as the best quarterback of all time? Too many questions, too much heart ache. To be honest, I’m still not over it- I’m concerned I may not be for a very, very long time. Some people call it pathetic; I’m not sure what to call it. I believe it’s a pure love, a love that can not be tainted nor relinquished.

Rough, for me, but in the end ok. The Packers loss led to the Giants win, and what a win it was. WOW. WOW. Although I wish it would have been the Pack against the evil Pats, I must say if not the Packers there is no one I would rather see rip the ever-desired 19-0 record from Tom Brady’s hands than the ever under-rated and over-criticized Eli Manning.

Over this football season, as my undying loyalty for the Packers continued, a tiny crush developed on Eli Manning. Not because he was the MVP or because he was the best looking or the most intelligent, but because I saw something in him that was very promising. It’s interesting how much criticism I received from all my friends (boys) for supporting Eli. Constantly with his mouth open and a look of confusion planted on his face, people didn’t get it. They didn’t get it when he threw unnecessary, ridiculous passes or when he ran the clock causing delay of game or even when he almost defeated the Patriots in game 16 of the regular season with exemplary leadership and talent mirroring that of his brother Peyton (quarterback of the Colts). Surfacing the publicist in me, I would highlight his pros and spin his mistakes, always hoping people would see him for more than just Peyton Manning’s little brother.

This past Sunday, everything was proven. Not only did the Giants beat the Patriots, they killed the 19-0 dream of the Patriots and brought Tom Brady back to the soil. There’s no need to spin anything. Eli Manning led his team to a wildcard playoff win, a NFC Championship game bid, a NFC Championship and THE Superbowl win. The boy that had everything to prove, proved everything and has the MVP title to boot.

Now the long and tired wait begins. August seems a million years away, but before we know it’s here and the highs and the lows start all over again. I’m ready. Brett Favre- MVP Superbowl XLIII.
